The best place to train and experience freediving in the United States is also one of the top locations in the world, according to Sport Diver Magazine. On a recent trip with Byron Kay, owner of Kona Freedivers, a certified free diving school, the magazine’s reporter experienced Honaunau’s popular “Two Step,” noting that, “Kona provides an excellent freediving classroom thanks to near shore drop-offs and a coastline riddled with protected bays. Plus, its underwater topography, sculpted by volcanoes, and thriving animal population add challenges to entice any diver to stay down just a smidge longer.”
